They are particularly common among young people, including many teenagers. Has your adolescent son or daughter told you they are interested in getting an oral piercing? Before moving forward, there are things that both you and your teenager should know about how this decision can affect oral health.

Risks of Oral Piercings

As a parent, you may want to respect your teen’s growing independence while still helping them make a safe, informed choice. Some potential risks of piercings in the tongue, cheeks, and other oral tissues include:

Cracked, chipped, or scratched teeth from biting or tapping jewelry

Gum irritation or recession from repeated rubbing

Infection, swelling, pain, or bleeding at the piercing site

Difficulty speaking, chewing, swallowing, or with keeping the area clean

Loose jewelry that may be swallowed or become a choking hazard

Some complications happen soon after the piercing, while others develop slowly over time. For example, a teen may not notice that a lip stud is wearing away gum tissue or that a tongue barbell is weakening enamel until sensitivity, soreness, or visible damage appears.

Tips for Teens Who Have an Oral Piercing

If your teen has already chosen an oral piercing or is determined to get one, your role can shift from deciding whether it should happen to helping them reduce risks. Keep the conversation calm and practical, and make it clear that safety and health should be their top priorities.

One of the first things you should do is find a piercing artist who has a reputation for proper sterilization. The first mouth jewelry that your teen wears, as well as any they choose afterward, should be made out of biocompatible materials, such as titanium, steel, or gold.

Once the piercing is in place, these tips can keep the chances of complications to a minimum:

Make sure your teen washes their hands before touching the jewelry

Encourage brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing after meals

Ask them not to click, bite, twist, or play with the jewelry

Have them remove jewelry for sports and wear a mouthguard when appropriate

Check that jewelry stays secure, but only with clean hands

Parents should also know which warning signs need prompt attention. Call your child’s physician if your teen has worsening swelling, fever, unusual discharge, severe pain, bleeding that does not stop, numbness, or trouble breathing, speaking, chewing, or swallowing. Get in touch with their dentist if they have visible signs of dental damage or start to complain of tooth sensitivity.

An oral piercing may seem like a small style choice, but it can have lasting effects on your teen’s smile. When you talk through the risks together and keep dental care a priority, you can help your teen protect both their confidence and their oral health.

Meet the Practice

Dr. Adrienne Archidiacono-Jeanis is a highly skilled pediatric dentist who is proud to serve the Aledo community.
